Google Interface Broken?
I'm not sure if this is the system compensating for a bug, but Google has reverted to a previous interface version. Check out the screenshot at right; click it for more detail. Obviously, there's some story behind this. It's running off the current index, but its clearly the old interface. It doesn't have the tabs for Desktop or Froogle, instead the old "Directory" tab. The front page has broken as well, losing the Desktop tab. Weird.

UPDATE: Okay, the interface is now back to normal, but still no Desktop. Something is wrong at Google.

UPDATE 2: Okay, I can only access Desktop via the system tray icon. If I'm in Desktop and click on another tab, the Desktop tab disappears, and there are no Desktop results in Google searches. Is anyone else seeing anomalies?

UPDATE 3: It appears that I'm hitting a weird snag with a random server farm, since I don't see anyone else with the same problem. I'll update if anything changes, or if someone else reports similar issues.

Comments:
Is it only me, or is Gmail not working for a few hours now? I keed getting "Server Error: Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

One of Google's server farms must have been a little screwy. The old interface came back for me for a little while again.

As for your Google Desktop problem, it sounds very serious. I wish I could test it out, but I don't use Outlook. Gotta wonder why the active indexing has problems that the initial indexing doesn't.
